Day 102 – An exiled premier (tried) come back

This is something like news break

Today morning I am chatting with Cileia from Switzerland who is in Islamabad working for Mobilink… …I knew that exiled prime minister Sharif is planning to come back from articles already a while before, but since than it was so quiet that I have forgotten.

And today morning she is asking me “How is Karachi?”… As there was absolute no difference between this day and the day before for me, I said “nothing“.

And only than she told me that she is at home, because whole Islamabad is closed down, roads blocked, offices and shops closed (actually is holydays), communal right canceled… Sharif is comming and gov is afraid about uproars…

How did it finish? As soon as he got out of plane, he got busted and sent back to Saudi Arabia.

…Asking me what it means? I dont know, his rule was not considered by very good by anybody I asked (said to do corruption BIG time), so his talks about bringing democracy back are quite questionable. What I know is that Pakistan is supposed to have elections this Fall. But nobody knows if they happen in 3 weeks, 3 months or not happen at all.

Day 107 – Between You and Your dreams is only You….

For a person like me, who speaks a lot and tries to inspire people it is still surprising and a little bit even frightening to see that somebody else is actually doing what s/he said, said something because You made him/her answer…

During the holidays in Istanbul Lenka had a weak moment when she told me she is missing something like a vision, something nice to follow and from a random discussion came a suggestion: 13 in 12… visit thirteen countries during the next twelve months…

…she took the challenge and is planning the completition of this right now.

We have created a very interesting kind of mental relationship, a status where we are not just friends but actually mentors to each other. No suggestion, no idea is ignored, no random thought is taken as only a joke but is actually considered. Thank You Lenka…

I also have some goals, stating them here, I have made another step to realize them:

1. spend one month (July 2008) travelling around Pakistan

2. I will visit the K2 basecamp

3. on the way from one home (Pakistan) to another home (Slovakia), I will take a train

4. after coming back to Slovakia, I will walk it from East to West

5. during the next five years I will visit all continents (S. America, N. America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Antarktis)

…I am not joking, I am already checking the opportunities (trip to edge of Antarktis costs from 1.500 USD higher… not that much :D )

Day 101 – Swiming in pool and lazying around…

Today was a 100 % Sunday… I woke up at 1 pm, had some food, watched Transformers and went to swim in the pool of a friend (Ahmen Mohamed) of a friend (Wangari Wanjau) that I have seen for the first time during the yesterdays party…

I would never expect that during my stay in Karachi I would have a chance to drink beer in a pool of a person I have met the day before :)

Todays pic: Lazing on a Sunn(da)y afternoon… In the summertime! (name copied from the Kinks song Sunny afternoon)

I am sorry that after that so highly informative and interesting articles there is this one… but You know… Every day is different, and some of them are not boring :)

Apart from this we watched Transformers, actually quite OK movie… a lot of action and impressin graphics, but watching it on a laptop display takes away a lot of the effect, the scenes have so much movement that You miss a lot…

Day 100 – A long day of a new UK guy

As it already becomes casual in Pakistan… another intern came :D

Andrew Webster from UK has arrived… At 5 am. After welcome at airport we went straight to a real pakistani breakfast and than for a looong sleep as the night before we have spent tidying our flat (started at midnight and finished at 4 am) and have not slept at all.

Straight after that we went to a party. We actually had no idea who is inviting and what is it about :) It was actually a party of “ambassadors” in a house of one of the bunch of serious, but funloving people… I can tell You, Pakistani beer tastes weird, can not say bad, but weird…

Day 105 – skies of orange and black

I have just finished watching “28 weeks later”… in fact, just an another zombie movie but…

I am sitting on the terasse of our house, alone in the half darkness of the city lights around me, You have to understand this to understand the feeling…

Its the kind of darkness they do in movies so that You still can see what is going on. And when You look up You see the orange lights of city. You stood up and You can feel the wind on skin and see the white clouds on dark black-blue sky.

Eventhough there is 18 milion people in the same city, nobody is in sight on streets, only few people who sleep on roofs as its colder than inside, are visible. And the city looks like being in flames. The orange colour on the horizon, the clouds above and the feeling that You get after You watch a well done movie… Am I still watching or is this really reality?

Day 099 – Compiling documents and Flag of Pakistan

As we still dont have internet at office, I have stayed at home to work… Concerning the fact that most of the day the internet didnt work the efficiency of this decission is questionable… I did some recruitment materials for Pakistan and send to Slovakia PDs a document I did a while ago called “MD CookBook” which is a sum-up of my knowledge in Member Development…

But the most important thing is that I have not gottten out of home again. So again only a cover-up picture… My todays pic: Flag of Pakistan

The flag of Pakistan was created together with the creation of the state in 1947 (yes, they have celebrated 60th aniversary this year… actually two weeks ago).

The symbol of crescent moon and star and also the dark green are symbols of Islam as Pakistan was created to be a state of the Muslims of Indian subcontinent. At the same time the moon and star should represent Light and Knowledge. The white stripe is supposed to represent the non-muslim minorities of Pakistan.

Interesting fact is that the early Islam had no symbol and the Prophet didnt want any graphic symbol to become identified with Islam. At the same time the symbol itself is thousands year old than Islam itself. It was only later when Turks conquered the city of Constantinople (earlier known as Byzantium, later known as Istanbul) in 1453 that Ottoman Empire (for hundreds years being the ruling power over Muslim world) adopted it.
